I've read this sentence.

"Rather than telling us in advertisements how good their products are, companies often prefer to pay for their logo to be displayed on a racing car or on the stage of a pop concert."

I think " Rather than tell us..." is a right sentence.
What's your opinion?

Rather than is what is called a quasi-coordinator, which means it is sort of a coordinator-- and sort of a preposition. Here it is functioning more like a preposition, hence takes the -ing form as noun object. It can appear in both forms, so your suggestion is OK too.
