What is the difference in meaning between #1 and #2 below?
1. This is the biggest single issue facing older people.
2. This is the single biggest issue facing older people.

Good news. I really don't think that there is any difference in meaning. However, number 2 is more common.
Good Luck!!!! _________________ - Mike

The second one is better as the issue is the biggest so biggest naturally comes before issue. As it is the "biggest issue" (superlative), single doesn't even need to be there but if you want it, it naturally goes before "biggest issue". I suppose the "single" stresses it.
Edit: on rereading this, biggest sounds a bit weird to me, even though it is perfectly ok. I would prefer "largest" or "greatest". |
