Hello,

Is it always "have the flu"?

a) I have the flu.
b) I have flu.
c) I have a flu.

Is there a reason why it's "have the flu", but "have a cold"? Or should I take it to be an example of the charming idiosyncrasies of the English language? (",)

Thank you,

Nawee

Ah, in American English it is "have the flu." Is it different elsewhere?

This could be because there is something specific involved here. Flu is something terribly contagious, so if it is in the air when one says, "I have the flu", then we are referring to something something specific, hence the definite pronoun.
