Hello,
I have some difficulty understanding a sentence.
The majority of them became like second mothers or aunts who make sure your life is headed in the right direction.
I just couldn't sort out the meaning of the "second mothers". Could you throw some light upon it?

.
A second mother is a person who acts as a mother (offering comfort, advice, and a ready ear, for instance) to one whose mother is absent or passed away.
