Are the following different in meaning or almost the same?
1. More than 1,000 kinds of vertebrates are endangered.
2. More than 1,000 species of vertebrates are endangered. |

They are nearly the same, since a species of animal (or in this case, vertebrate animals) is a kind of animal that cannot reproduce with other species. Species is more precise and probably the one you would normally see in prose talking about endangered species.
