LaMont has gained momentum by hammering away at Lieberman's staunch backing of President's "stay the course" policy in Iraq.
What is hammering away in this sentence?
Thanks. |

To hammer away is keep doing something or saying something repetedly.
There are more verbs where the particle away means more or less the same: chat away, slog away, etc.
