In the quote, I don't know why 'A knowledge' is used instead of 'knowledge'. I think because 'knowledge' is not a countable noun 'a knowledge' can't be used. Can you tell me why the writer use 'a knowledge' instead of 'knowledge'?

Thanks.

The expression is fine, even though you are right, that "knowledge" is not a countable noun like "spoon" or "boat."

This use is somewhat of a substitute for saying "an understanding of the headlines" or "a familiarity with what is in the headlines." This would be a little different from the kind of "knowledge of headlines" that, say, a newspaper editor might have, meaning knowing how to write them, what size to make them, what to emphasize in them, etc.

You will also hear the expression "a working knowledge" from time to time, for example: "He has a working knowledge of French, but he isn't really fluent."
