Wiki comes from wiki wiki, a Hawaiian word meaning quick. -pedia is borrowed from enyclopedia.
The combination of words makes sense because the encyclopedia uses wiki software, and because one big advantage of the site is that the encyclopedia can be updated very quickly to respond to current events.
