Since it describes how it is raining, it should be an adverb, hence, "It is raining heavily." However, you are more likely to hear:
"It's raining hard." I know, it's not an adverb, but that's what people say.
"It's raining cats and dogs."
"It's really coming down hard!" _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

"Hard" can be an adjective or an adverb depending on the word it modifies. It is an adverb in:
Work hard and play hard.

Hi CP,
You're being modest. English is an easy language to learn but takes more than a lifetime to master. I'm trying hard to learn the language too. _________________ Mary W. Ng

Ms. Ng,
". . . takes more than a lifetime to master." That's really what I was implying. All of us are learning the language, even if we think we know it pretty well. I welcome correction of my errors, and my thanks were sincere. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
