what's the difference between

He went to Texas during his senior year
he went to Texas in his senior year.

They both mean pretty much the same thing, telling when he went to Texas, but "during" would probably imply that he spent his whole senior year in Texas, while "in" would imply that he went there when he was a senior, but maybe not for the whole year.
