Hi, there,
What does the phrase "off to a bad start" mean?
What does "off" mean in the phrase?
Thanks for your reply.

.
Off means away on a path of some sort, and usually from the starting point:
We started off with a shrimp salad.
We headed off to Colorado.
We drove off in a Volkswagen.
Off to bad start means beginning something in a bad way.
