Knowing syllabication is most useful when you are writing or typing. If you come to the end of a line but have not completed a word, you may divide the word at the end of the line, but the word must be divided only at the syllable. For example, if you were writing the word thermodynamics close to the end of the line, you would look up the word in the dictionary and note the syllabication. You could then divide the word at the end of any of its syllables.

Can you explain the above paragraph giving an example with 'thermodynamics'?

Thanks.

Thermodynamics is syllabified as ther-mo-dy-na-mics (5 syllables). A syllable is that part of the word that is pronounced together and that can't be further divided. You say ther together, you can't break it as th -er. Heat is a monosyllabic word.
