Now onto the issue. The security breach theory could very much be the reason. As we all know both China and the US have marked each other as a potential enemy. That's quite understandable really. They are the only two entities on this world that have enough resource, military strength and influence to be of any significant threat to each other. Having North Korea over there constantly test firing Chinese supplied missiles doesn't help any, either. So part of the US plan to project a remote control over eastern Asia is to set up a missile defense line (TMD anyone?) in the pacific that consists primarily of Japan, South Korea and possibiliy Taiwan. Now Japan and South Korea are pretty much out of reach for the Chinese to stop the TMD or any other military deployment for that matter. The only hole left is Taiwan, and China might as well grab this chance to keep the hole open or make it even bigger.

How? Well, I've explained this a long time ago (probably 10 pages back or even in another thread). Basically, controlling Taiwan means controlling the access to the coastal trade routes running from southeast Asia all the way up to Yellow Sea . Unfortunately, both South Korea and Japan lack natural resources. They need the trade routes for their industries to survive. Whoever that controls the trade routes then, will have a lot of say in whatever decision they make. When the Chinese takes over, a total collapse of the pacific defense line would most likely ensue.
Just another cat and mouse in the new cold war era.

The Pacific Islands area is controled by Indonesia and the Phillipines. I don't know about Indonesia, but the Philippines has been on the U.S side, hasn't it? So, if Mainland China would get Taiwan, it would be the military base to defend against the Philippines, or in other words, the U.S to stop invading the East Asia also??? Confused

When I mentioned the pacific defense line I wasn't referring to the pacific islands. It's a vision by the US to create a military buffer zone near south eastern China. Two of the most prominent participants are Japan and South Korea, though it makes perfect sense if Phillippines is "in on it" as well. Taiwan is important in this because of its geographic location. If China gains a foothold on Taiwan it effectively destroys the whole idea of the defense line. You can't "buffer" any military advance when the door is wide open.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by this. Not good with military phrases, ya know. Embarassed

I simply meant that in the hypothetical scenario where China controls Taiwan and decides to invade the US via the pacific ocean, even if South Korea and Japan interfere, it will be of little consequences. China can simply use Taiwan as a launching pad, bypassing any land based defense in the vicinity.

Thanks. Might this be the same reason why Mainland China has been trying to get the South China Sea Islands in their total control? Confused

To be fair, that's the motivation for the other countries too (Vietnam, Philippines), not only China.

With different purposes and motives, though.
