Dear teachers,

Is the following sentece correct:

Beside his job my husband used to study at the Jazz School, fortunately, these studies are finished now.

"Beside" means "next to" in physical space; "besides" means "in addition to."

Also, you need either a semicolon or a period before "fortunately," as otherwise it runs too much together.

I would re-write it as:

"Besides working / holding down a job, my husband used to study at / used to attend the Jazz School. Fortunately, he has finished his studies / he is finished with his studies / his studies are finished now."
