Learning a language is never easy (I speak four, so I know). Determination will help you a lot. Your friend, who went to London should be able to learn a lot. If you are learning in your home country, then you need to study a little every day. If, like your friend, you are in a foreign country then studying helps, but the most important thing is that you make the effort to listen absorb the language around you at every opportunity.

Don`t expect to become fluent right away, just keep working at it and little by little language will come.
