Hello...
I am korean student.
My english is not very good. But I trying to speak english.
I wonder whether below sentenses are right or not.
1.That`s the place she stays when she`s in London.
2.That`s the place where she stays when she`s in London.
My teacher is taught me that both 1.sentense and 2.sentense are agreeable to usage.
But Dr.Randolph Quirk said that~
"With a general antecedent, such as place, we may find the following patterns, which however are not acceptable to all speakers"
(?) That`s the place she stays when she`s in London.
How would you discribe these sentenses?
sorry. My ability to express myself is still immature.
Looking forward to hearing your soonest and accurate answers...
Thank you ... |

.
Well, my first reaction is that at your level you should not be reading Quirk-- that is for advanced ESL students.
As he says, however (and I think you have his statement reversed): some speakers are unhappy with the where; it seems redundant. Nevertheless, you may feel free to use it if you wish to do so. Few will notice.
Have I helped or hindered?

Both 1. and 2. are OK, and normal English. |
