iam new to this site and i have doubts about following:
i have gone to that place
i went to that place.
which one do we have to use and when?

If all I heard you say was, "I went to that place," I would presume that you went there once, or at least that you are telling me about one time.
If I heard you say, "I have gone to that place," I would take it to mean that you probably have gone there more than once.
If you have particular sentences with the simple past ("I went") versus the present perfect ("I have gone"), go ahead and post them, and any number of people might answer. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

...i would like to add that 'i went to that place' is more commonly used in everyday language while speaking with your friends or family.
'i have gone to that place' is more formal and can be said in the presence of anyone, but i would use this sentence when i am speaking to an authority figure (teacher, priest, businessperson, etc). iitimone7 |
