In the above quote, 'Similarly' is not correct, I guess. Instead, 'On the other hand' is right, I think. But I'm not certain. If I'm wrong, can you let me know why?

I think "similarly" was used because, just as elements are not often found in a pure state in nature, but are rather mingled, so are substances produced by living things found mingled together. I would be "on the other hand" if the last sentence talked about something that is always found sorted out and separated.
