Dear Teachers,

1. What's the difference between "that's it!" and "that's all!"? are they the same meaning? can you give me some examples?

Thanks a lot to Teachers,

Stevenukd

'That's all' usually means 'that's everything' or 'there is nothing more than that'. If a child is crying then the parent might explain 'oh she dropped her ice cream, that's all' - meaning that is the extent of the problem, it isn't anything more serious than that. You could also order an expensive dish in a restaurant and be brought a small plate containing very little food, and ask 'is that all? This is as much food as I'm getting?'

'That's it' can be used in the exact same way (think of all and it as talking about a whole, an entirety, all of the thing you're talking about) but it also has many other meanings, depending on what it refers to:

'Is this your pen?' "No." 'What about this one?' "Ahh, that's it." ("That's the pen I'm looking for")
(Someone having an idea) 'That's it!!' ('That's the solution/something that will help')
'Here we are, this is our hotel.' "That's it?" ("That's the hotel we're going to spend two weeks at? It's dilapidated!")
