I don't understand the meaning and grammar in the bold part in the following sentnece. If the first "as" is omitted, I can understand the meaning is "though it is important to understand the task in front of them."
But with the first "as" it is very difficult for me to understand the meaning. Please help. Thank you.

The p is still missing in the first important, jays.

The first as is optional. The formal structure is 'as...as', which means 'although': (As) happy as I am to see you, your haircut repels me = Although I am happy to see you, your haircut repels me.
