Thank you, CP!

"I must have been confused" is a new lesson to me.

I've never known the pattern "verb + have". I guess because "must" is an irregular verb, so the pattern is unique. I would like to know is there other verbs that can be used with "have" to form thier paste tense?

I might have been confused.
I ought to have been confused.
I should have been confused.
I could have been confused.
I must have been confused!

I wouldn't classify them as verbs, though. I think they are usually referred to as modals.

Yes, I think they are modals, too. I was going to say that at first, but I changed my mind. Sometimes I say too much . . . .

Pronounced:
I mustubin confused.

It's funny how we run things together when speaking. And we use short phrases that can be confusing.

I remember when I went to China, my good friend didn't know what I was meaning when I asked "how come?"

"How come?" means "why?" - like "how did it come to be that way?"

Within a few days she was asking "how come?" and I had switched to "why?" to be more clear. haha

Yes, I got it. "must" is a modal, not a verb. But is it right that sometimes it can be called a modal verb?

Thanks very much to Lorikeet and CP!
