Hello everyone,
I have been told that saying "May I have a question?" or "Can I have a question?" is something that English do not use.
What is the alternative then, please?
"May I ask you something?"
(The context is that between lines I am also asking for some favour. Similar to this forum, for example. I am new to this forum and I do not know if anybody even bother to answer my request. So I am trying to be polite and find out whether I can even ask here
Thank you |

You can ask anything here.
"May I have a question?" doesn't make sense to me. You aren't going to ask permission to have a question. If you have one, you have it! However, you can ask permission to ask it. Therefore, "May I ask you a question?" is fine. |

Also, it is fine to say, "I have a question" to signal that you want to ask something, whether on these forums or in conversation.
Zbynja: "John, I have a question."
John: "Shoot."
Zbynja: "Where did you get that crazy jacket?"
(John might also say, "Go ahead," or "Yes, what is it?", or "Oh?", etc.) _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
