A friend of mine mentioned "blaze the trail" during a short conversation. I am sure that she was talking about someone pioneering in doing something. How is that commonly used?

Yes, Miss Daredevil, "blaze the trail" does mean to pioneer, to be the first one to go into the wilderness, where there are no trails, and make the first path through for others to follow.
