Hi, everyone!

I understand as and so are sometimes interchangeable without making much difference in meaning.

Do you think this is also true in the pairs below?

A) Tom is not so much a researcher as a teacher.
B) Tom is not as much a researcher as a teacher.

A) He entered the office without so much as knocking.
B) He entered the office without as much as knocking.

I would suggest that you stick with so. That way you know you are correct.
Substituting as probably wouldn't be noticed but I am not sure if it is grammatically correct.
Perhaps Lorikeet or some other teaching professional could comment.
