Quote:
I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars,
climb halfway to the stars!

The quote is a old pop song titled by 'I left my heart in San Francisco.'.
I'd like to know the meaning of 'To be where little cable cars, climb halfway to the stars!'

Thanks.

A lovely song, with a nice verse to start it out, too.

It means, "I would like to be there, the place where they have cable cars (funiculars) that go up the steep streets."

San Francisco is very hilly, and the cable cars are convenient to go up and down the steep streets.

As thay say, when in San Francisco, if you get tired of walking up the street, you can always lean on it.

I correct myself. The meaning of the song is a little different. (I keep hearing it in my head since reading this question. Maybe now it will stop!)

Let's just translate the lyrics:

I left my heart high on a hill in San Francisco. My heart is calling to me to be in the place where cable cars climb high up -- halfway to the stars, it seems.

I Left My Heart in San Francisco

By George C. Cory, Jr. and Douglass Cross

The loveliness of Paris
Seems somehow sadly gay.
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day.
I've been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan.
I'm coming home to my city by the bay.

I left my heart in San Francisco,
High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars
Climb halfway to the stars.

The morning fog will chill the air
I dont care.

My love waits there in San Francisco,
Above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
Your golden sun will shine for me!
