Hi All,
I am confused about the use of articles for nouns like Friday and January.
Is the following sentence correct?
'On the Friday, I went to market'
Here I am talking about my activities in a particular week in the past.
Please explain with a few examples.
Thanks,
MG. |

Usually, we don't use any article at all with days of the week or months of the year. On Friday, I took my shirts to the laundry. In February, I am always very hopeful.
Even if speaking about a particular week last February, I would most likely say "on Friday," not "on the Friday."
Same for routine events. On Sundays, this Church has two services. The restaurants are always busier on Fridays than on Mondays. (These sentences could be in the singular or the plural.)
We do use articles sometimes: On the last Friday of every month, you will be paid. I remember we first met on a Monday. That was the February that I met your mother.
Hope this helps. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
