Everyone has different learning methods.
In Taiwan , most of students always through textbooks and cram schools to learn English in order to get high scores in English test. The motivation is disappear and they dont learning English anymore. So it is say that students has high level in the third of junior high school and senior high school , has low level in the first of senior high school and freshman, because of JECC.
I ever had a classmate who learn English very well. He always got high scores in any test. I asked him the methods of learning English. He said I never go to cram school and study English for preparing English test. Only he does is reading English magazine, listening the English listening and popular songs. Just does that but everyone says that English very well.
I see. Most of students in Taiwan take learning English as a tool to deal with any test. Dont learn it out of their heart. The Students different motivations and the results they get has totally different.
I think this is the primary cause that most of students in Taiwan not learn English well. |

I don't think that the way of learning English is currently good in many parts of Asia. In general, teachers are not guilty of this, but the enormous competence in business and other professional careers lead to a huge stress among students by cramming exams and memorizing vocabulary and grammar. It is a mistake.
On the other hand, mostly tests serve to evaluate or/and select a set of candidates to a job vacancy or a MA, but the can be used as a reference in your English learning. You can just learn a language by means of its daily usage - magazines, radio, movies, etc.. |

I teach in junior high in Taiwan, of course, English. This semester I suggest my students to study for FUN......
I often tell them how late I search for the funny stuff online about English teaching, and no doubt they get a lot of so called "interesting stuff" to learn, including comic strips, short short e-stories, nursey rhymes, any other classroom activities they love carzily in class. I do all these for FUN, too. After all, we have our English classes in various ways---by the way, to tell the truth, it is a lot of fun to me and to most of my students. No doubt, I still have the textbook content to cover, but honestly the context doesn't motivate me a lot, and even worsely I don't think there's so called "plots" in readings or dialogues. And a lot of my students learn the textbook materials already in cram schools, which is out of my control...... The most touching moment was once when my second grade girl student "Only" told in my English class, "Miss Chen teaches us what cram schools don't teach anyway......" I feel proud just because I teach them not only to learn for tests but also for FUN mostly. Learning is fun in life. That's what I want them to feel, especially when English is the way for them to explore the world. _________________ Fannia |
