Today a friend recommonded me a love poem, due to my lack of knowledge of poems, I couldn't totally get this poem. would you please interpret this poem for me? thanks in advance. Here is the poem.
A White Rose
The red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.
But I send you a cream-white rosebud
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.
ok, what the hell dose the poem mean??
My explanation is: the white rose is a woman, and the red rose is a man. in order to kiss the white rose, the red rose has to call her "dove". finally, the red rose and the white red kiss each other on their lips.
I know maybe my explanation dosen't make sense. that's why I am asking you guys for help. |

He's (or she's) saying that his love is pure and passionate.
I guess you've charmed another bird out of the trees! |

The idea is very simple to me: even the purest of love needs (and has) a little bit of passion. _________________ Stormy Weather. |

How many of such "friends" do you have? However if you have too many your husband may catch you easier _________________ If I say "I love you" to someone, then I also have to say "I also love everyone else inside you, I love the whole world because of you, I also love myself inside you." -- Erich Fromm, the Art of Love |

thanks guys for your decent interpretations. you guys are all poetical. before reading you guys' explanations, I thought this poem was all about kiss and lips.
Sigh!! I have even written some poems in the past!! and with such awful skills of poems, you can see what a terrible poem I was!
I am gonna give up my dream of becoming a poet, since I am so bad at poem-writing and reading. |

Hi RedRose,
I don't usually roam outside of the help forums. But, I stumbled on your thread with this poem in it. This person certainly thought about what he wrote and must be very fond of you. I used to write poems. But I don't have time to write them anymore. It's not an easy task, and one can tell when there's a voice of sincerity in it, as this one seems to have.
Here's my interpretation:
The poem is full of metaphors. Red Rose is you who whispers of passion. You are demure with a small flame inside you yet to be shown or expressed. White rose is what he seeks or aspires the relationship to be. It is a pure love, like a dove. Red rose is a falcon flying free and elusive. He sends you a white rosebud (budding love) whose petal tips are flushed with red (Red Rose). The petal tips are the red lips which hints the kiss of desire for a love that is pure and sweet.
This person writes well and seems to like you very much.

Dear lotus, thanks for your interpretation, it's very brilliant of you.
However, I must admit I have a fine laugh when I read your post.

look at those boldfaced words. you definitely thought this poem was for me, didn't you?
oh, I wish it was for me!! the Red rose in the poem isn't me. I even don't know the writer of the poem. a few weeks ago, I roamed on a website of poems, I found this poem very emotional and complicated, but I liked it, so I copied it and pasted it on the board to ask friends for help.
lotus, I have noticed you are very excellent at English literature, so lemme guess what you majored in in your college years: English literature! right?
thanks again lotus for your great interpretation. it's a great joy to read your posts. |

Hi RedRose,
A quick search shows the poem to be written by Irish-American poet John Boyle O'Reilly (1844-1890). It seems appropriate for you since you are Red Rose.
He's comparing the passion of a red rose with the purity of a white rose. And he seeks a love that is pure and sweet, with a touch of passion.
