Teachers, could you please tell me if the word "its" might be replaced by "it's" in the sentence below:

"Her companion, however, appeared to leave the luck so on her hands that she could only snatch up, to cover its nudity, the next handsomest assumption".


By the way, I must confess that I'm not always sure about when to use "it's" and "its". I'm mean, there are cases, like the one I've mentioned above, in which I believe both could be used. Any help will be welcome!

No, "its" is the only choice. It's used for possessives. You can only use "it's" to mean "it is." Your sentence wouldn't make sense if it was, "Her companion, however, appeared to leave the luck so on her hands that she could only snatch up, to cover it is nudity, the next handsomest assumption".

It is a common mistake made by native speakers, so if you saw it that way, that might be the reason.
