Hello, teachers!!

(1) If I had known what to do, I should have done it.
(2) If I had known what to do, I would have done it.

What do you see the difference between (1) and (2)? Of course, the difference is about "should" and "would."

I don't understand "would" and "should" in this kind of sentence. My small English experience tells me both (1) and (2) are right, but (2) is much better than (1)...This is just my guess.

In American English the two sentences are different. Let's use the first conditional to make it clearer.

If I know what to do, I should do it. I am aware of my obligation, my responsibility but I'm not promising anything.

If I know what to do, I will do it. I promise!
