.In the 1930's, more than a thousand interviews with former slaves were conducted by members of the Federal Writers Project.
.Carbon-14 analysis is not able to be used to date such inorganic materials as pottery, rock or metal artifacts, often the only traces of early man. (I'm not too sure about this one!)
.Like every other nation, the United States used to define its unit of currency, the dollar, in terms of the gold standard.
.While we were stopped at a roadside hot dog stand, an airplane flew over our heads with such a deafening roar that we almost choked on the sodas we were drinking.
.As a rationalist, he took pleasure in exposing the errors of those whom he considered slaves of emotion.
.To avoid panic, you should do your thinking before you become part of a panicky crowd. ("you should think before" is even better, but it is a bigger change.)
.The first important application of the principle of fusion was in an attempt to understand the sun.
.Thoreau is remembered for his attacks on the social institutions he considered immoral and for his faith in the religious significance of nature. (I'm not sure of the specifics of Thoureau's writing. Another possibility is: Thoreau is remembered not for his attacks on the social institutions he considered immoral, but for his faith in the religious significance of nature. - I think the first version is more likely.)
.After several publishers had returened the manuscript as unpublishable, the author no longer knew anyone to whom to send it.
.The National Air and Space Museum, which opened in 1976, had a million visitors in the first twenty-five days and 9.7 million visitors came there in the first year. ("came there" could also be deleted. The sentence is a little clumsy with it included.)
.Even during the winter, the American song sparrow is heard in short, brief snatches of song on sunny days. (Using both "short" and "brief" is redundant. You could delete either one.)
.Cooking utensils should be chosen for their utility and ease of care the same as their attractive. (I'm not sure what the intent of the sentence is. Are we supposed to correct the sentence with the idea that attractiveness is as important as utility and ease of care? Or not very important? I'll assume the latter: Cooking utensils should be chosen for their utility and ease of care, more so than for their attractiveness.)
.Thomas Nast was known primarily as a political cartoonist.
.Prices reach an equilibrium at the level at which quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. (Another redundancy.)
.Billy the kid, a famous outlaw who was killed when shot by a sheriff, was actually named William H. Bonney. |
