What follows is the third paragraph from the story "Sanctuary" from Agatha Christie.

Quote:
Christened by her optimistic parents Diana, Mrs. Harmon had become Bunch at an early age for somewhat obvious reasons and the name had stuck to her ever since.

I simply don't get it why people called her "Bunch" for "obvious reasons", which are not so obvious to me. I guess there must be some kind of special meaning related to "Bunch", but I have no idea what it is.

Anyone can shed some light, please?

Dear Erik, Because Ms. Christie mentions the name sticking to Diana, it must be a nickname (Bunch with a capital B). (Diana is her "given name") Nicknames "stick" not out of design. They "stay with" a person because enough people call him/her that long enough. One can only understand why they called her Bunch, if one reads and understands the previous sentences of the novel, the context. Just read it a bit deeper.
