Is "Abstaining" in the following sentence correct? I think it should be "Abstaining from" because abstain is an intransitive verb.

Abstaining calorie intake can hinder cell multiplication rate and prevent cancer, resulting in prolonged life span. |

Abstaining from would be the grammatically correct phrase here, but it is not suitable. "Abstaining from" means not doing something at all, although one can just abstain sometimes.
'Restricting' or 'reducing' would be better here.
We usually say '(restricting)(reducing) caloric intake'. ("caloric" is an adjective.) |
