I don't think anyone says "(rest) in the bed" but we do say "in bed" and "on the bed".
I had a very bad backache so I stayed in bed all day.
The cat is sleeping on the bed.
"Rest on the bed" suggests lying down on the bed without changing into your sleep clothes and without getting under the quilt, sheets, blanket, etc that you cover yourself with when you sleep.
Tom is resting on the bed for a while before supper.
"Rest in bed" suggests that you have your sleep clothes on, or at least you are not wearing your day clothes, and are under the covers.
I woke up at 7 o'clock but I (stayed) (rested) in bed till 8 o'clock. |
