Dear Teachers,

1. We're starting in New Orleans during Jazz Fest week. We're staying in the noisy French Quarter of the city. From there they're driving north to Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Elvis Presley.

- What does "French Quarter of the city" mean here? and "they're driving north to Memphis" means "they're driving to the north to Memphis", right?

Thanks a lot to Teachers,

Stevenukd

1. The French Quarter is an area of the city New Orleans in the state Louisiana. In Paris, you have the Latin Quarter. In Los Angeles, you have Koreatown. These are names for areas or districts within the city. Quarter is just another way to say district. Most likely a native speaker would leave off "of the city" in the sentence: "We're staying in the noisy French Quarter."

2. From Louisiana, which is on the Gulf of Mexico, just east of Texas, we are going to Memphis, a city in the state of Tennessee. Arkansas is just north of Louisiana, and Tennessee is just east of Arkansas. So Tennessee is north or northeast of Louisiana. We have to go north to get there.

You can Google "map United States" and find all kinds of maps if you like.
