"Give it up" is the way we say it, but I don't know why. A lot of verbs with particles are that way: hand it over, turn it around, stand it up, cool it off, write it down, take it away, brush it off, wipe it down . . . .

When a phrasal verb is separable you can say:

He gave the match up or he gave up the match.
But if you use a preposition the only way to say it is: He gave it up.

If the phrasal verb is inseparable there is no word order change:
He offered to look after the children.
He offered to look after the them.
Correction:He offered to look after them.
