Please, could you tell me if 'make' is correct in the following sentence?

I slowly made one step after the other.

or would it have to be:

I slowly took one step after the other.

(refers to walking)

No, I would not use make a step when referring to walking. It would be correct, although not as common as take, when referring to progress in a general sense.
