Finally, on April 21, they arrived back at Cooper's Creek, only to find that no one was there. The rest of the expedition left the day before because they thought Burke must be dead.

First, what does the above bold sentence mean? Does it mean that 'they stopped the rest of the expedition on April 20 because they thought Burke must be dead.'? If so, how did they stop it on April 20 which was the earlier than April 21 which was the date when they arrived?

Secondly, I'd like you to give me a substitute for 'leave' in the above quote.

Lastly, 'the day before' in the above is 'noun' or 'adverb'?

Thanks.

.
I don't know the whole story, but evidently the rest of the expedition departed on April 20th. The rest of Burke's expedition team did not wait for him because they thought he was dead. They in the first sentence is a different group than they (Burke's companions) in the second sentence.

I think.

The day before is a noun phrase functioning as an adverb of time.

The ans is no to your 1st question.

As for your 2nd, in addition to departed as suggested by Mister Micawber, try took off, cleared out, went away & vacated the place.

The day before is indeed a noun phrase with day as its head noun, the article the the determiner and before the adjective. It tells when the rest of the expedition left and therefore is an adverb.
