About three thousend residents were protesting against the 'illigitimate' building of a bypass road.

Could I replace illegitimate by: 1. unnecessary
or 2. unwarranted

Thanks!

Even though I am not sure what meaning you want to express, "illegitimate" doesn't sound like the right word to use here. Do you mean 'illegal'?

Dear 2006,

No, it don't think it should mean illegal. I think it should express that there is no reason or need to build a new road. - And my question is whether or not I can use 'unwarranted' in this case.

I'm looking forward to getting your reply.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Crisi,

You can use any word which fits the intended meaning - illegal, unwarranted and unnecessary are all possible. "Illegitimate" is not likely an intended meaning.
