Dear Chan-Seung, 3. is correct if you add an 'if' clause, like 'if they hadn't run out of fuel'. Otherwise, 1., 2., & 4. are not correct. With the 'by now' ending phrase, the verb of the sentence should have either 'would', 'should', or 'could' as a helping verb, or be in the past perfect tense. Why? That's the way English is. 'By now' has a limited use. OK?, Eric |
