Which one is correct?

..the book contains disrespectful descriptions and distortions of* the* facts.
Is the *the* omittable?

1. The first one is correct. In this sentence, you want a noun (or noun phrase) after "those of" - and "her husband" fills that need. If you want to use "husband's," then you still need to add something to make it a noun phrase: "... those of her husband's mistress."
