Please help me;
You said, "I'll come back here by five".
When this direct form is put into indirect,
You said that you would come back there by five.
But the answer actually seems to be "here" instead of there and I don't understand.
Would anyone please explain why?? Thanks so much. |

I don't think "come back there" will work, and here's why:
At 1:00, Mr. A says to Ms. B, "I'll come back here by 5:00." Both are at Place 1.
Later, at 5:00, Ms. B is at Place 1, but Mr. A is not. Ms. B calls Mr. A and says, "Mr. A, you said you would come back here by 5:00, but you aren't here." She is at the same place, so it is "come back here."
Or: Later, at 10:00, Ms. B is at Place 2, and she calls or sees Mr. A and says, "Mr. A, you said you would go back there [Place 1] by 5:00, but you didn't show up." She is at a different place, so it is "go back there."
Does that make sense? Hope it helps. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
