Hi, everyone.

I wonder which sentence is correct, or more often used.

A) The door is made so as to open when a man stands on the mat in front of it.

B)The door is so made as to open when a man stands on the mat in front of it.

I really don't understand which word order would be better.

Thank you!

Either is fine. I'm not sure whether one is better, but you would be more likely to write it that way than to say it that way.

You might want to change "a man" to "a person" or "someone," just to be politically correct -- and statistically correct. There are more women than men in the world.

You can also say:

The door opens when someone stands on the mat in front of it.

The door is made to open when someone stands on the mat in front of it.

Hi, CP

Thank you for your reply.

I posted this question only 40 minutes ago and have already got a reply!

I can't believe we live across the Pacific Ocean from each other.

Yes, we live in a magical time. Literally anyone on Earth might have answered your question, and in less than 40 minutes, depending on the circumstances. If that isn't magic, what is?

I was speaking with an 18-year-old about the Internet, and he told me that he cannot remember a time when the Internet was not available to him. What an entirely different world he has grown up in. He has taken magic for granted all his life.
