i heard on the radio today:
they believe they put a finger on the arms(galaxy)
"put a finger"means "get to know something"?

I usually use 'put my finger on something' when I can't remember the exact thing I'm trying to think of.

For example:

I'm sure I've seen her somewhere before, but I can't put my finger on it.

(I can't remember exactly why I think I know her ... I think we've met, but I can't recall where.)

I know there's a book that explains this very well, but I just can't put my finger on it.

(I can't remember the exact book that will help in this situation, but I do remember seeing one in the past.)
