Which is true according to the followingt "the old argument", especially when it comes to tense?
"There has been the old argument that if extraterrestrial civilizations were widespread, one of them would already have contacted us by now. "
1) Extraterrestrial civilizations are not widespread, for any of them didn't contact us by now.
2) Extraterrestrial civilizations were not widespread, for any of them hadn't contact us by now. |

Perhaps the "old argument" is fallacious.
Maybe they don't want to contact us. |
