Yes, Cheetah the chimp is a famous actor. Too bad his name wasn't chosen with a little more thought. Why name a chimp "Cheetah"? Would you name your cheetah "Chimp"?

A chimp is not a monkey, but rather an ape. Other apes: gorillas and bonobos (African, like chimps); orangutans, gibbons, and siamangs (Asian apes).

Apes are shaped more like people, with bodies that are wider than they are deep, and shoulder blades on the back. Apes have no tails.

Monkeys are shaped more like dogs, with bodies that are deeper than they are wide, and shoulder blades on the sides. Monkeys have tails.

Apes are more intelligent than monkeys. Some gorillas and chimps have been taught to communicate with sign language. No monkey could do that.

Apes and people can brachiate -- swing from branch to branch with full movement of the arms -- because of their very flexible shoulders. Monkeys can't brachiate.

A gibbon brachiating is a beautiful sight to behold -- they are so athletic and daring ....

Ha! If it's any comfort, we're all monkeys to the chimps, too.
