Could you explain to me what an author really means when he says "Trade trumps politics as U.S. explores Vietnamese markets"? I'm not very clear about the word "trump".

In some card games (e.g. Bridge, Whist, Euchre) one suit is picked to be trumps.
This means that the suit of cards is more powerful than all the others.
A two of trumps would be more powerful than an Ace of any other suit.
This meaning has been extended to other fields and in your question means that the need for trade is more powerful than any political differences, which may exist. |
