A: I'm in Professor Kim's political science class. She told me that she'd put some articles on reserve for her class.
B: Yes, they're at the reserve desk. |
I have two questions.
First, what does 'put something on reserve' mean? I think that 'put something in reserve' is right rather than 'put something on reserve' but I'm not certain.
Second, what does 'the reserve desk' mean?
Thanks. |

Libraries are the best. Librarians are always there for you, very friendly, and always deserving of special thanks.
Librarians often take requests to hold a book for someone who requests it until the person can come in to use the book, just in case someone else comes in to check it out in the meantime. This is called putting the book on reserve. Big libraries and many school libraries keep all the books held on reserve at a particular desk. The library user asks for the reserve desk, the librarian directs the patron to the reserve desk, and the reserve librarian gives the patron the book.
At a bookstore, it's called putting a book on hold (to be purchased), or holding a book for a customer. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb

Thanks for your kind explanation, CP.
While I surely understanded what 'the reserve desk' means, I still have one question about 'put something on reserve'.
That's which is right ,'put something on reserve' or 'put something in reserve'.
Thanks. |

Oh, well, it's usually "on reserve."
I notice I actually said "in reserve" in my answer, but I'm going to change it. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
