Hi everyone! Smile

I'm going to take the writing test for getting driver licence in the US. Reading the digest of state motor vehicle laws I found out that main roads in the USA have several names such as 'freeway', 'highway', 'expressway'. The meaning of 'highway' is clear for me. But unfortunately I can't say the same about meaning of 'freeway' and 'expressway'. Could you explain what difference is?

I really appreciate your help.
Thanks! Smile

Hello Mary Poppins -

Freeways and expressways are both limited access highways. That is, unlike highways, there are no intersections with cross traffic or traffic signals (stop lights).

A freeway, as the name implies, is toll free. An expressway may, or may not be, toll free.

An expressway is usually "divided", having a median between opposing lanes of traffic.

Highways are main direct roads between towns/cities.

Freeways and expressways are usually in urban areas or connect cities close to one another (?? someone feel free to correct me).

An "Interstate" would be an example of an expressway connecting cities/towns across the nation.

BTY - "the written test"..."getting a drivers licence"...."about the meaning of"...."explain what the difference" (hope you don't mind)

Good luck on your test. Let us know how you do. Philo :)

Ooh, driving! I love driving! When in doubt, close your eyes, honk the horn, and step on the gas. That's what I do. Wink

Hello CP -

Careful...might have to change your name to CHP!

.....and your signature quote to "If any question why we died, tell them because 'we drove and closed our eyes'."

Mary Poppins - I wouldn't recommend adopting CPs' driving style when taking the 'road test'. Philo :)
