Hello,

I was reading tongue twisters and came upon one that I can't fully understand.

"The queen coined quick clipped quips."

What is the meaning of "clipped" in that tongue twister? I cannot find a meaning that would make it fit in the sentence... or maybe this is because I am misunderstanding another word. What I think the tongue twister means is that the queen made a short and funny comment, but then what is "clipped" doing here?

At any rate, any help would be more than welcome.

Clipped speech is speaking in an abrupt, staccato way, very crisply, snappy. I think the clipping notion is about cutting off anything not needed to get the word out, just the opposite of a slurring, drawling way of speaking.

Nice of you to say that, for me and for all the people who answer the questions posed here. I'm sure other "teachers" would agree when I say I admire all the "students" who try so hard to master this difficult but very useful (and even beautiful) language. I am happy if anyone learns anything from my answers or others' answers.
